Bath Time!
Holiday brief

We have finally done it – managed to find a nice hotel in Bath for our annual trip to Somerset and surrounds. So, here is a classic Inside Track “country” itinerary based in one of England’s most interesting and beautiful cities. Come and enjoy some of the loveliest countryside in England along the Avon Valley, and relax with us touring around the local area, offering river trips, steam railways, local museums, and of course, a “must do” visit to the Marquis of Bath at the ever popular Longleat.

OUTLINE ITINERARY

Friday – We meet at the hotel (opposite Bath Station) around lunchtime, and once altogether, enjoy a welcome drink and light lunch before setting off for the afternoon. Let us introduce you to Bath and the River Avon by open-top bus, an informative short walkabout, a historical town museum and our own-chartered boat on the Avon from the famous Pulteney Bridge and Weir.

Saturday – A stately home, safari park and steam, luverley steam beckons today as we head for Longleat and Cranmore. At Longleat, enjoy the safari tour from the comfort and safety of our coach and then there is plenty of time for the Longleat Railway, a water safari and even to visit the house itself if you wish. After lunch it ’s a short drive to Cranmore for the excellent East Somerset Railway. After a steamy chug through Blackmore Vale we head back via a rural route to Bath.

Sunday – A relaxed Sunday start, then we are off by train and coach to discover steam “down on the farm” near Castle Cary and on the famous Somerset & Dorset track bed. We’ll enjoy a lunch break in Bradford-on-Avon then head for Bitton, where an excellent steam and river combo will entertain us for the afternoon – steam on the Avon Valley Railway and another privately chartered rustic boat will provide the perfect finale.

OUR HOTEL

The Royal Hotel, Bath
Situated very, very conveniently directly opposite Bath Spa Railway Station and only 5 minutes walk from the Abbey, Pump Rooms and other city centre attractions. The hotel offers very pleasant rooms with all the expected facilities of a 3 star establishment. Of particular note is their charming restaurant, offering a fine selection from their menu, and a comfortable, airy lounge bar area - perfect for Inside Track.

Monday – An interesting contrast to Bath will complete our holiday by travelling to Bristol, where the major attraction is the unappealing sounding Bristol Docks! In fact, it is a fascinating area, and our visit will include the historic S.S.Great Britain, a waterfront museum, harbour boat trip and maybe, even a train trip on the old dock railway. Anyway, a fun filled morning precedes lunchtime refreshments, then homeward bound journeys commence from Bristol Temple Meads Station mid afternoon.

Special Note: Depending upon timings when we finalise the itinerary for this holiday, we will, on one evening invite you to make a short but scenic rail trip over to Avoncliffe for an hour or so, and on another evening you might like to enjoy Bath ’s “Ghost tour”. Both will be optional but at no additional cost!
