Carmarthen Cracker
Holiday brief
The southwest corner of Wales is frequently overlooked and definitely
underrated.
The scenic splendour of the Pembrokeshire Coast is second to none and at its
most pleasant in the summer months. We are based in historic Carmarthen, itself
a very interesting and attractive town, and have put together an itinerary that
will comprehensively introduce this beautiful part of the country.
Join us for steam railways, branch line travel, the Pembrokeshire National Park,
and a wonderful day out via the Heart of Wales Line
– altogether a sumptuous summer treat.

OUTLINE ITINERARY
Friday – We meet at remote Clarbeston Road in the heart of West Wales early afternoon
and make the short transfer to a most interesting museum with transport links
at stately Scolton Manor.
On then for our first branch line ride travelling from Milford Haven to
Carmarthen where we check in to the Ivy Bush Hotel.
Saturday – A terrific circular tour begins with a short coach journey to Llanelli where we
connect with the Heart of Wales Line for a delightful rural rail journey to
Llandrindod Wells.
On then for a scenic drive across the mountains to Cardigan Bay, Aberystwyth,
and the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
Time here for refreshments before taking the dramatic steam train ride up to
Devil
’s Bridge. A relaxed journey back to Carmarthen combines coastal and rural scenery and
includes a stop en route.
Sunday – A local circular tour takes us to the north and into the Teifi Valley at
Henllan.
Here we enjoy narrow gauge steam with the recently extended local railway. Our journey continues via Cenarth, through the Preseli Hills, and on to
Fishguard where we connect with the daily boat train and return to Carmarthen
by rail.
Today’s finale is an excursion out to Bronwydd Arms for a ride on the local Gwili
Steam Railway, just three miles from Carmarthen.

OUR HOTEL
The Ivy Bush, Carmarthen
Carmarthen is a delightful place to stay. It is an ancient town with Roman roots, an amphitheatre, castle and is
associated with the Welsh wizard Merlin.
Our hotel is of a very high standard with all the usual facilities one would
expect and with the advantage of a town centre location. Relaxing on the
terrace in the evening sunshine is a particular delight. This hotel
consistently rates as one of our most acclaimed establishments.
