OUTLINE ITINERARY
Thursday – We meet at Penrith Station about lunchtime and begin with a glorious drive over
Hartside Top and on to the highest market town in England, Alston. Our steam
today comes courtesy of the South Tynedale Railway before we cross the hills
and take a scenic rail journey to Carlisle from Haltwhistle.
Friday – We are off for our first “lakes” day and commence explorations by local rail around the Cumbrian Coast. Two
waterborne treats are included with the historic Steam Yacht Gondola and a
full-length cruise of Windermere. Sandwiched in between, at around lunchtime,
is the standard gauge Lakeside
& Haverthwaite Steam Railway.
Saturday – All most people usually do is ride the train on the famous Settle and Carlisle
Railway. Here is your chance then, to ride the rails and see the sights. This
delightful scenic tour includes stops in Settle, at Ribblehead Viaduct and in
lovely Hawes as well as the train journeys from Carlisle to Settle and back
from Garsdale.
Sunday – Hoping for glorious weather in the lovely Lowther Hills we set off across the
border and into Scotland. The Leadhills
& Wanlockhead Railway is Britain’s highest (adhesion) railway and it’s here that we start. Later we’ll go mining for lead, panning for gold and maybe even learn some poetry (!) – a really varied day out.

OUR HOTEL
The Lakes Court Hotel, Carlisle
This fine hotel is ideally situated directly outside Carlisle Station and
central to the city.
Its location makes it a perfect base for us allowing the option of arriving or
departing by rail or coach as required. There is a pleasant bar area and all
the usual facilities one would expect of a three-star establishment are
provided. Carlisle is an ancient city that retains its Cathedral and some of
the city walls.
It is a compact place although the extent of the official boundaries make it
England
’s largest city. Convenience and comfort are the key words that describe the Lakes Court Hotel.

on Ullswater, the inimitable Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, and the highlight
– “Mountain Goats” over the awesome Hardknott and Wrynose Passes – magic and excitement, and with tea and biscuits as well!!
Tuesday – Our final day sees us walking in the footsteps of the Romans. We leave Carlisle
by train for the pleasant ride back across to Haltwhistle and then take a
stroll for some great views of Hadrians Wall and the surrounding countryside.
Our last stop is at the fascinating Roman Army Museum at Greenhead en route
