Edinburgh Excellence
Holiday brief

Our only single centre Scottish holiday is set in the heart of historic Edinburgh. From here we take in the very best of the regions historic and modern transport attractions. Visits as diverse as the modern Falkirk Wheel and the nostalgic Bo ’ness & Kinneil Railway are melded into an exciting five-day adventure. We’ve also devised a day to the south for steam in the country and even a monastic island. Expensive, we know, but bear in mind that the price reflects the quality of what we do and where we stay – hotels in central Edinburgh are anything but cheap.

OUTLINE ITINERARY

Thursday – Arriving early afternoon we’ll check into the hotel and dispense with luggage before embarking upon an afternoon tour to familiarise the city. With our knowledgeable blue-badge guide we ’ll see the sights from coach and from foot. View Carlton Hill, The Royal Mile, The Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace – we’ll maybe stop for a wee dram as well.

Friday – This morning we embark upon a circular rail tour to the north completing The Fife Circle. From Waverley Station we head over the Forth Railway Bridge and enjoy coastal scenery up to Kirkcaldy. The return route takes us inland via Cardenden and Dunfermline back to Edinburgh. We ’ll make a refreshments stop en route and should arrive back by early afternoon allowing for some time to independently explore Edinburgh.

Saturday – It’s away to The Borders today as we rail south as far as “bonny” Berwick. A pleasantly paced day includes the opportunity to visit monastic Holy Island and inland to Heatherslaw for narrow gauge steam on the friendly local railway. We track back to Edinburgh using a scenic country route along Lauderdale and will stop for a leg-stretch along the way.

OUR HOTEL

The Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh
Located next to the Royal Mile and Princes Street this is one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious hotels. As one would expect all rooms are of a very high standard, boasting all the usual amenities. Being so centrally positioned is the ultimate attraction, as you ’ll no doubt want to go out and about for evening explorations in this fine city.

Sunday – Today heralds a big day out staying local to Edinburgh. Our first visit is to the engineering feat that is the Falkirk Wheel – modern canal history in the making. Lunchtime and early afternoon are spent at the Bo ’ness and Kinneil Railway. There is a very good railway museum here to complement a steam hauled ride with photographic opportunities. Finally, we board The Maid of the Forth for a delightful cruise on the Firth of Forth admiring the road and rail bridges, the wildlife and the fortified islets – a fitting finale to a splendid day.

Monday – Our final day takes us eastwards by train to North Berwick. Nearby we find the Museum of Flight and what could be a holiday highlight aboard Concorde. We ’re back in Edinburgh just about lunchtime to commence homeward bound journeys.
