Severn Aside
Holiday brief
New to our 2008 programme is a holiday based in historic Shrewsbury – a town almost completely encircled by the River Severn. This really is a lovely
place with half-timbered houses and quaintly named old streets. The itinerary
we have devised is abundant with variety and all our top attractions are sited
in delightfully scenic locales. Peruse the following and we
’re sure you’ll decide that a holiday, supreme, is the Severn Aside (poetry as well – what more could you want!).

OUTLINE ITINERARY
Friday – We meet at Telford Central Station at about 13.00 hrs and enjoy a “local” afternoon en route to Shrewsbury. Nearby is iconic Ironbridge where we pause
for photographs before heading on to the best of the 'Industrial Birthplace'
museums - Blists Hill, a lovely presentation of a lifestyle long gone. We
’ll complete the journey to Shrewsbury by rail from Telford, arriving late
afternoon.
Saturday –Today we focus on one of the country’s premier steam railways – The Severn Valley. The line follows the river and along the way are some lovely
towns and villages to visit. We
’ve enough time to really do the railway justice and include options and
flexibility throughout. At the Bridgnorth end we also incorporate a ride on the
famous cliff railway and we
’ll finish the day with a rural rail ride back to Shrewsbury from Ludlow.
Sunday – A classic Inside Track circular takes us across the border and into Wales. By
train to Welshpool and then a morning spent with the, ever so rural, Welshpool
& Llanfair Railway. Riding on the balconies of these trains instils an almost
continental atmosphere
– great fun! Our afternoon takes us north to the Dee Valley and standard gauge
steam

OUR HOTEL
The Prince Rupert Hotel, Shrewsbury
This very pleasant, town centre, three star hotel is our home for three relaxing
nights. It combines olde world charm with modern comforts and hosts an array of
historic period features. Once the home of the grandson of King James 1 it is a
family owned establishment (though now a different family!) and exudes the
friendliness of welcome one might expect.

with the Llangollen Railway amid lovely scenery. The circle is completed at the
end of the day as we return to Shrewsbury by rail from Ruabon.
Monday – The gem of the Midlands, The Black Country Museum, is the final highlight of
this holiday.
Unheralded beyond the region this is the most varied museum in the country. Trams, trolleybuses, industrial heritage, street scenes and an amazing boat trip
are sure to keep you fully occupied during our visit.
A short transfer sees us saying farewell mid-afternoon at Wolverhampton Station.
