OUTLINE ITINERARY
Wednesday – We meet at Holyhead early afternoon, then board Stena’s high-speed catamaran for the voyage to Dun Laoghaire. We continue by Dart, Luas and Iarnrod Eireann from Dublin to Athlone arriving at
the Creggan Court by about 20.30 hrs.
Thursday – Athlone, the “capital” of the heartlands, is the perfect base for a series of rail/coach-coordinated
tours. Today commences with a visit to the extensive Peat Bogs Railway, and
continues by coach and train to Galway, Eire
’s most traditional and colourful town. Fabulous scenery unfolds as we head north
through Connemara via beautiful Leenaun to Westport. We complete the day with a
lovely rail journey back to Athlone.
Friday – We head north today enjoying the changing scenery, from the bog lands to
beautiful lakes, the mighty Shannon and rolling hills. We tour by coach and
train to Dromod where we spend time at the delightful Cavan
& Leitrim Railway. Based at the junction with the mainline, this rural station is
a delight and we enjoy a ride and tour of the unusual exhibits plus traditional
Irish hospitality before heading back to Athlone.
Saturday – We head for Kerry today by coach and then by train from Roscrea to Ennis via
Limerick. We continue to Moyasta for the ever-improving West Clare Railway
where we partake of a full round trip and afternoon tea. We cross the Shannon
into County Kerry and reach Tralee early evening to complete a superb days
’ travel.
Sunday – A relaxed day with time to visit local attractions in the morning before
heading to Listowel for the unique Lartigue Railway. This is a superb
re-creation of the famous Ballybunion Railway and our visit provides an insight
into this engineering curiosity.
Monday – The beautiful Dingle Peninsular is Kerry at its best and is the setting for one
of Inside Track
’s best

OUR HOTELS
We stay at The Creggan Court, a modern hotel near Athlone (3 nights), and then move south to the very
traditional
Grand Hotel in the centre of Tralee (4 nights). From County Kerry we travel to the family
run
Talbot Hotel in Wexford, situated on the quay in the heart of the town. The Creggan Court and
the Talbot have lifts, but the old and traditional Grand Hotel does not. All
these hotels are comfortable with rooms that provide all the usual amenities.

days out. Ride the Tralee and Blennerville Railway, trace the line to Dingle,
and marvel at the spectacular views around Slea Head and from the top of the
Conor Pass. A gem of a day in the Emerald Isle.
Tuesday – Today we head to Cork by train and on to Cobh for the excellent “Queenstown” exhibition in the superbly refurbished old station building, telling the story
of Irish emigration to America. We then head to Killarney for a lake boat trip
and complete the day with a scenic drive back to Tralee.
Wednesday – We are off to Wexford today by coach and train via famous Limerick Junction and
on to Waterford, probably the most rustic train journey in Eire. We visit the
Waterford and Suir Valley Railway, the longest and most scenic preserved
railway in Ireland, which runs along the banks of the River Suir. Onward then
by mainline train to Wexford and our final base for this holiday.
Thursday – Wexford is a gem, so there will be a couple of hours to enjoy the seaside
before we set off on our last excursion of the holiday. A circular tour via
Carlow, a train ride to Waterford and then our finale
– a lovely cruise on the River Barrow from New Ross. We’ll be back in Wexford in plenty of time for a relaxed last evening together.
Friday – Alas, it’s homeward bound, but with happy memories as we set off on our last train
journey direct from Wexford to Dun Laoghaire. This train journey is regarded by
many as the best in Eire, and is a fitting finale to our tour.
