The Snowdonian
Holiday brief
It could well be that Snowdonia is the area singularly most suited to an Inside
Track holiday
– it has everything. There’s a wealth of railway attractions within this compact region and, of course,
some of the finest scenery in the land. It
’s also a progressive place, constantly striving to offer the best it can to the
visitor and this is particularly reflected in the efforts of the Welsh Highland
Railway, pushing south through the mountains towards Beddgelert and Porthmadog.
Come to North Wales with us this September and you can be assured of a relaxed
and rewarding holiday set in a beautiful part of Britain.

OUTLINE ITINERARY
Thursday – We meet at Llandudno Junction and the holiday commences with a Victorian tram
ride up the Great Orme for far reaching views. We then catch a train along the
beautiful Conwy Valley to bleak Blaenau Ffestiniog and connect into the last
train of the day on the Ffestiniog Railway to Porthmadog
– a lovely journey and a memorable introduction to Snowdonia.
Friday – To southern Snowdonia today. We leave Porthmadog by rail on the Cambrian coast
line to Tywyn. Here we are made welcome by the oldest operating preserved
railway, The Talyllyn. Travelling back northwards we break our journey for a
ride on the friendly Fairbourne Railway and pop across the water for a look at
Barmouth - a super day out by the coast.
Saturday – A stunning day out concentrates on the ever-expanding Welsh Highland Railway. This really is a scenic journey to savour with views of the Menai Straits and
Snowdon. We complement this with a trip over to Anglesey to see the famous
bridges that cross the Straits, lunch in historic Caernarfon, and end the day
returning to Porthmadog by rail following the coastal route from Pwllheli.
Sunday – A relaxed local day in and around Porthmadog. Steam, on both the Ffestiniog and
Welsh Highland (Porthmadog) railways is dovetailed into

OUR HOTEL
The Royal Sportsman, Porthmadog
The Sportsman describes itself as a home from home. It is a friendly, family
run, three star hotel with a reputation for good food and a warm welcome. Its
location could not be better being just a couple of minutes stroll from the
main railway station and the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog). Walk ten
minutes the other way and the Ffestiniog Railway headquarters are found at the
far end of the high street - an ideal position from which to operate this
cracking itinerary.

an itinerary that offers a degree of flexibility. We’ll take in picturesque Portmerion, industrial heritage at the Llechwedd Slate
Caverns and enjoy super scenery throughout.
Monday – Our final day and we’ve saved, arguably, the best for last and a literal holiday highlight. We
journey to Llanberis, hoping for clear skies above, and board an early train
for the steam-pushed ascent of Snowdon. A fitting finale before the short
transfer to Bangor for homeward bound trains.
