The Yorkshire Wheel
Holiday brief
Huddersfield is a pleasant town set in a valley surrounded by rolling farmland,
criss-crossed by dry-stone walls. This part of England provides an excellent
touring locale with numerous attractions sited within a relatively compact
area. Being based here we are able to include so many of them, especially as we
incorporate the August Bank Holiday. We enjoy at least four major steam
railways and three of the countries premier museums.
Splendid Yorkshire Dales scenery, viewed from road and rail, combines with trips
on the Leeds/Liverpool Canal and the modern Manchester Metro to create a most
diverse and exciting itinerary

OUTLINE ITINERARY
Friday – We meet at Wakefield Westgate Station around lunchtime and trundle across
country towards Huddersfield. En route we call in at The National Museum for
Coal Mining. This place is a revelation. The extensive site comprises a
collection of colliery buildings housing impressive displays within. There
’s a narrow gauge railway linking the two ends of the site and there will be the
opportunity to take an
“enlightening” underground tour.
Saturday – We commence the day by rail travelling through the Pennines to Manchester. Here
we take the Metro to G-Mex to the extensive Manchester Science Museum - railway
memorabilia, social and economic displays and the impressive adjacent aviation
hall. Our afternoon takes us by Metro north to Bury for the ever impressive
East Lancashire Railway and standard gauge steam fun before the scenic journey
back to Huddersfield.
Sunday – A circular tour to the north takes in two steam railways and includes a trip on
the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. We start off in the Worth Valley with the railway
that almost defines Yorkshire. On then to Skipton with time for lunch before a
gentle cruise on the historic waterway. In the afternoon we enjoy a steamy ride
on the Yorkshire Dales Railway before taking a scenic rail route back to
Huddersfield.

OUR HOTEL
The George Hotel, Huddersfield
Being directly outside Huddersfield Station this “railway style” hotel is perfectly located for an Inside Track holiday. All rooms boast the
usual tea/coffee facilities, T.V., trouser press, and other amenities expected
of a three-star establishment. The menu is impressive and the bar has a claim
to fame, being where the rules of Rugby League were established. Reassuringly,
the building is permanently watched over by Harold Wilson
– so it must be good!

Bank Holiday Monday – We leave Huddersfield by rail today on the scenically delightful Penistone Line
before arriving at Elsecar for a ride on this fledgling preserved railway. On
then for narrow gauge steam at the Kirklees Light Railway before a fitting
finale with our friends at the revamped and improved Middleton Railway in
Leeds.
Tuesday – Our final day starts again by rail as we head off to historic York. We’ll ride Yorkshire’s equivalent of The London Eye for a birds eye view of the city (York that is – not London!) and spend the rest of our time at the extensive National Railway
Museum before collecting luggage from our waiting coach and embarking on
homeward bound journeys.
