Buckinghamshire Steam Railway Holiday
This is Inside Track’s “local” holiday based in Buckingham at a superb hotel – Villiers – and the holiday is so called because there are a “bucket” load of varied attractions in our area. From spying in Bletchley to Swiss Gardens and from cruising the Grand Union Canal to sailing the River Thames, and from Chinnor in the Chiltern’s to the Jumbo Express. The bucket is loads of fun and bottomless!
Meet at Milton Keynes Station about lunchtime, then after an extensive tour of the city (takes 4 minutes!), we are off to enigmatic Bletchley Park – the National Code Breaking Centre. Here is your opportunity for lunchtime refreshments and ample time to explore the “huts” individually. Late afternoon we set off for Buckingham enjoying the best of our local scenery en route.
Variety, this is what Inside Track Is all about, and doing things unusual. So we are off on a great rail journey today – from Bletchley to Bedford – stunning (!), and then a morning and lunchtime at Old Warden for the Shuttleworth Collection (vintage aircraft ‘n cars ‘n stuff!) and the unique Swiss gardens. Not really “local” but part of a circular tour that now takes us to “local” railways in the Northampton area including the Lamport Steam Railway.
A day of animal connections, would you believe, starts in Leighton Buzzard (and there’s the first one!) where we enjoy a morning steam up with Buzz Rail – narrow gauge fun to Stonehenge and back! Then, around lunchtime we’re off to the zoo, zoo, zoo! Whipsnade that is, and more railway action as we view the animals from aboard the Jumbo Express. We finish the day at our most “local” railway attraction and more steam at Quainton Road and the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
Heading south today we have two railways to enjoy and a cruise. end up on the Thames cruising between Abingdon and Oxford. We start the day with local rail from Aylesbury to bring us to Princes Risborough. This will be the first Inside Track group to ride on the newly extended heritage line to Chinnor. A lovely country feel to this one and you may see a bit of cricket as we chug along! Later, we stop off for a ride on the inimitable Cholsey & Wallingford Railway and more rural charm before finishing the day on the Thames enjoying a tranquil cruise from Abingdon to Oxford.
No “local”holiday in our area would be complete without visiting our Old Gaol in Buckingham, and then our local Grand Union Canal complex at Stoke Bruerne. A museum and cruise on the canal before we set off for Milton Keynes, lunchtime refreshments and homeward bound trains early afternoon (after another 4 minute tour of the city) – wot fun!
Villiers Hotel, Buckingham
By far and away the best hotel in the area and maybe the best we use, Villiers is 4 star, full of character and boasts a lovely restaurant and bar. Expect very pleasant rooms and very good food. Town centre, yet quietly tucked away, we have the perfect location and hotel for Inside Track’s “local” tour.
